His new yacht was built at the Quincy-Adams shipyard and was considered the most perfect variation and further development of the theme Olin Stephens had earlier set with Dorade. And the concept worked. The new yacht was launched in the spring of 1938, in time for the upcoming sailing season. She was christened Baruna and already in that year she won the 650-nautical-mile Bermuda Race from Newport, Rhode Island, to Hamilton Island, Bermuda. This, of course, is a prestigious event and difficult offshore race that has been sailed every two years since 1906 to this day. In winning this race, Baruna set a style that she was actually able to maintain over the following years. She was the first yacht to finish, a full eight hours ahead of the second boat, and was the overall winner of the entire fleet as well as of her own Class A. The award for best navigator went to her designer Olin Stephens, who was on board in this capacity for the race.
